Author-Illustrator Stephen McCranie

Fourth-grade teacher Colby Sharp runs a comic book club. I asked his fourth graders if they would finish six sentence starters about the time author-illustrator Stephen McCrainie Skyped with their fun club.

I wrote the words in red, and Mr. Sharp and his students wrote the words in black. Thank you!

Mr. Sharp started a Comic Book Club because my students are wild about comics, and they needed an opportunity to spend more time learning about how to create comics of their own.

Learn how to draw Mal.

Stephen McCranie told us that all characters are made out of shapes, it is important to get to know your characters when creating comics, and you don’t need cool technology to make comics.

Learn how to draw Chad.

Mal and Chad are best friends that are adventurous and love having fun. Mal is a science wiz and Chad is a talking dog.

We think Mr. McCranie has a true passion for art and comics. We also think that he is very kind for giving up his time to teach us about comics.

We read graphic novels and comics because they are fun to read, they come in all of our favorite genres, they are the best of both worlds (novels and picture books).

If you’re looking for some top-notch graphic novels, we highly recommend you check out

Mr. Schu, you should have asked us about the super cool characters we are creating in comic book club.

Borrow Mal and Chad from your school or public library. Whenever possible, please support independent bookshops.
