Sometimes I forget to introduce or promote my favorite books to a specific grade level. For example, A Tale Dark and Grimm was VERY popular with my fourth graders the year it was released. Those fourth graders are now sixth graders. (Gosh, time sure does fly!) Earlier this week, a forceful internal voice announced rather loudly,"YOU HAVE NOT TOLD YOUR FOURTH GRADERS ABOUT A TALE DARK AND GRIMM. THEY WILL ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! MAKE SURE YOU BOOKTALK IT."
Did I listen to my demanding inner voice? You betcha! I read aloud the first chapter to two fourth-grade classes. If you've read the book, then you know the first chapter is fast-paced, intriguing, and reels in the reader. Both classes begged for one more chapter. One student said, "How could you do that to us, Mr. Schu?" I said, "Well, you will have to read the rest to find out what happens. You'll want to check out In a Glass Grimmly, too."
