Janet Lee Carey is an award-winnning author and the founder of Library Lions, a blog that celebrates libraries and librarians. I invited her on Watch. Connect. Read. to discuss school visits and connecting with readers.

I wrote the words in red, and Janet wrote the words in black. Thank you, Janet Lee Carey, for this wonderful opportunity.

*A successful school visit is all about inspiring kids. Asking thought-provoking questions and challenging them to look at how stories impact their world. I love exploring their questions and insights together.

*I connect with readers on school visits, at literature festivals, and online. We converse on Facebook and through email at my website. Lots of fun! But I refuse to write their book reports. ;)

*If I visited your school I’d start with some fun assemblies. One question I ask, “If a book sat on the shelf unread for a thousand years, would the story still exist?”

*My novels are primarily adventures. I love putting my main characters in peril and watching them fight back. That’s the external action part. The internal stories end up being about identity and integrity.

*The Library Lions blog is my way to Roar for libraries! I interview youth librarians in schools and public libraries across the U.S. to showcase their terrific programs. It was a blast interviewing Mr. Schu.

*Reading is walking in other people’s shoes. A book invites you to take a walk around in someone else’s life. Such walks can create a wider world view, and hopefully compassion.

*Mr. Schu, you should have asked me about why I became a writer. The short answer is I fell in love with books as a child reading up in the branches of my “reading tree”. I couldn’t imagine anything more wonderful than growing up to be a writer and I was right.

Janet Lee Carey was raised in the redwood forests of California. In the whispering woods she dreamed of magic worlds. She is the award-winning author of eight Young Adult novels including Dragonswood, (Kirkus & School Library Journal starred reviews). School Library Journal calls her work, "fantasy at its best-original, beautiful, amazing, and deeply moving." Carey links each new book with a charitable organization empowering readers to make a difference. She taught college novel-writing classes for ten years. She now tours the US and abroad presenting at book festivals and conferences for writers, teachers, and librarians.

In a dark time when girls with powers are called witches, Tess escapes the witch hunter and hides with a mysterious huntsman until magical voices draw her deeper into Dragonswood where she learns the secret of her birth. Caught between love and loyalty, Tess chooses the hardest path of all, her own.

~Kirkus starred review line for Dragonswood:

* “a fairy tale for those who have given up on believing in them, but still yearn for happily ever after.”
